Los generadores eléctricos son maquinas que convierten energía mecánica en energía eléctrica. La energía eléctrica mecánica que mueve el generador se puede proceder de diversas fuentes, alimentadas a su vez por petróleo, turbinas de vapor caídas de agua. La mayoría de los grandes generadores se diseñan en formas cilíndricas, con el inductor rodeando al inducido. El inductor o el inducido se hacen girar por medio de una fuerza mecánica. La parte que gira se conoce como rotos, y la fija se le denomina estator. En la mayoría de los generadores, el inductor (el electroimán) es el rotor y el inducido el estator. El generador ca es el más empleado para producir la electricidad de consumo (ca son las siglas de corriente alterna). Cuando gira el inducido en el campo magnetico, corta las líneas de fuerzas magnéticas que emanan del electroimán. En un giro de 180°, la corriente generada en el inducido fluye en un sentido. Durante el siguiente giro de 180°, la corriente fluye en el sentido opuesto. Este mecanismo origina una corriente y una tensión alternas. A cada revolución completa del inducido se le llama ciclo. El numero de revoluciones o ciclos por segundo se le denomina frecuencia y se mide en hertz. La corriente alterna es el tipo de electricidad que se suministra a las casas y oficinas de casi todo el mundo. Existen dos tipos principales de turbinas: las de vapor y las de agua. A las turbinas de agua se les conoce como sistemas hidroeléctricos. La energía procedente del flujo del agua, por ejemplo de una presa se utiliza para mover las turbinas. Las turbinas se unen al generador, haciendo que su rotor también se mueva. En una turbina de vapor, el agua se calienta para producir vapor. Este vapor se comprime y se dirige hacia las turbinas, haciéndolas girar.
